  The Syrian Society of Gastroenterology was established in 1976 in Damascus, Syria, as requested by Professor Muafak Malki and Professor Munzer Dakak. They invited all Syrian gastroenterologists and established the first administrative board in spring of 1976. Pr Malki was elected as the first president of the society & Pr Dakak as the first secretary of the society. The number of the fist participants at that time was 27 physicians.

   The first meeting of the society was held in Damascus, Syria, in October 1980.

100 physicians attended this meeting.

   The society adheres to the Organisation Mondiale de Gastroenterologie (OMGE) in 1980.

   Since that time, 3 main activities are organized by the society:

1-  A monthly meeting in one of the teaching hospitals in Damascus.

During this meeting, interesting digestive cases are discussed by

the attending physicians & medical students.

Similar disinguished  activities(Monthly meetings)are held in Homs

(Middle Region Branch of the SSGE).

2- A regional meeting in the autumn of each year held in different counties of Syria.

3- A general meeting in the spring of each year attended by distinguished

speakers from all over the world.

An endoscopic workshop precedes the activities of this annual meeting

and attended by well-known experts in the field of digestive endoscopy.

   The previous presidents of our society since its establishment were:

5-     Pr Ali Saada
